The date is set – Virginia vs. Colorado Wine Smack Down II – August 24, 2010, Denver, CO.
This taste-off is a follow up to the inaugural Virginia – Colorado Smack Down held in Denver earlier this year. As with the inaugural event, Jake Harkins of the Colorado Wino blog will organize and represent Colorado wines, and I will represent Virginia. Any fellow Virginia wine enthusiasts that happen to be in Denver next month are welcome to join the taste-off to lend some home team support – or would love to get a Virginia winemaker out to Denver for the event!
For reference… The initial taste-off was held at Bonacquisti Winery and featured red wines of both states in a blind comparative tasting that included two flights – a red blend flight and a cab franc flight. Seven tasters participated in the taste-off and each person scored wines based on their preferred scoring methodology, and then selected their favorite wine of each flight. You can read the complete results of the Virginia – Colorado Taste Off here and at ColoradoWino.com.
In addition to Jake and I ‘Tweeting’ throughout the taste-off and each of us posting a recap of the tasting on our blogs, we are also working to have the event recorded on video – ideally streamed live.
Like our first event, this ‘summer wine taste-off’ will provide a great chance to shine a much deserved spotlight on the wines of both states and provide exposure to a wider audience – an audience that would not have otherwise been exposed to each states wines.
Tasting Format: We have settled on five separate flights, and are considering an additional flight for Riesling. As with the initial event, each flight will be tasted blind:
- Chardonnay flight
- White blend/Open White flight
- Viognier flight
- Rose flight
- Sauvignon Blanc flight
Virginia wineries/winemakers – As Virginia prepares to host of the 2011 Wine Bloggers Conference in Charlottesville next summer, exposing the wines of our state to a wider audience takes on greater importance. WBC11 and other events that showcase Virginia wines are essential to educating consumers about the amazing wines being produced in our state (especially considering the mainstream wine media rarely shines a spotlight in this direction).
